Seeing that this year the Zolder endurance race was once again to be included in the Belcar championship, it meant that some of the fixed values were back at the start. And yet many opted to swap their regular battle weapons for a Porsche. On top of that a number of crews chose to bundle together their strengths whereby the competitors' field did not come up to the desired size. However notwithstanding that for a major part of the race there was enough suspense on the track.

ProSpeed Competition for the fourth time on the podium and solid leader in the championship

De redactie

ZOLDER - After a lengthy summer break the Belcar Endurance Championship competitors were back in action to compete in the 24 Hours of Zolder. Marc Goossens and Maxime Soulet, who for the occasion had to support of endurance specialists David Loix and Markus Palttala, drove to a second place in the race, resulting in a fourth consecutive podium this season in the Belcar Endurance Championship. In addition Marc Goossens and Maxime Soulet in the CPL Trans- Clabots Tools-RoundUp Porsche 911 scored, notwithstanding a mechanical problem early on in the race, both after six, twelve and at the finish highly valuable points, and as such now with a solid buffer under their belts can take on the last two races of the season. After a great catch-up race in wet conditions during the night, Bert Longin, Enzo Ide, Franois Verbist and Xavier Maassen were able to consolidate the event and finish up on top. In this 33rd edition the Audi R8 LMS clocked up 818 laps. Notwithstanding the rather limited field after 22.00hrs on Saturday evening, spectators enjoyed a close fought battle for victory during the entire event.

Pictures: Finish

De redactie

http://www.24u.be/2011/en/fotopages/album/45/

Pictures: The cars that have crossed the finish line

De redactie

http://www.24u.be/2011/en/fotopages/album/44/

Pictures: Last hours of the race

De redactie

http://www.24u.be/2011/en/fotopages/album/43/

Report after 21 hours: WRT on the way to clinching victory following the KRK Mercedes accident

Gordon McKay

The rain has stopped, the track is dry and the pace is increasing. The most important fact this Sunday midday is obviously the accident between the KRK Mercedes, which was lying second, and the Skylimit Race Porsche. Koen Wauters, who was behind the wheel of the Mercedes, was pushing hard to reduce the gap with the WRT Audi which was in the lead. During an overtaking manoeuvre in the Bianchi he nudged the rear end of the Porsche which slid sideways. The Mercedes then hit the Porsche a second time and broke its right front suspension. Wauters still managed to bring the car into the pits, where it was pushed into the pit garage and repairs, which took 48 minutes, were carried out. The Mercedes is now back on the track, but is 30 laps down on the leading Audi.

Sven Van Laere regarding the incident with the KRK Mercedes

Gordon McKay

Sven Van Laere: "Koen has just come over to apologise for the incident. It's a regrettable accident but quite clearly a race fact. I was shown the blue flag in the Bianchi, however it wasn't being waved which normally indicates that a faster car is approaching but has not as yet put in an overtaking manoeuvre. So I took the normal line through the Bianchi. Koen was under great pressure to reduce the gap with the WRT Audi and decided to try an overtaking manoeuvre from far back. Koen hit the Porsche's rear end lightly, but I lost control and the car went sideways whereby the Mercedes hit our car a second time with more serious consequences. When you are fighting it out for overall victory you need to take far more risks. Apparently the damage to our Porsche is not too serious and we hope to finish the race without any further problems.

Pictures: Zolder at morning

De redactie

http://www.24u.be/2011/en/fotopages/album/42/

Report after 17 hours: Fabulous duel WRT - KRK

Gordon McKay

In our previous summary we declared that even though the DSC cars had left the scene the race was far from over. The rain ensured that WRT and more especially Longin was able to reduce the difference with the leading KRK Mercedes during the early hours. Thanks to well timed pit stops Longin and Verbist were soon under the rear wing of the KRK muscle car..

Halfway: One lap separates KRK from WRT - 13 cars remain in the race

Gordon McKay

During the second quarter of the Zolder endurance race it was a fair amount quieter. With most of the DSC competitors having left the scene 16 cars remained on track with every intention of finishing the race. It did not take long before the leading VEKA Ferrari was obliged to throw in the towel due to engine problems. As from the seventh race hour we saw two Belgian GT3 cars, namely KRK and WRT leading the field. A situation which was not to change during the following five hours. Both cars were lapping in very similar lap times, however it was the WRT Audi that was systematically reducing the difference, bringing it to within a one lap difference. This Kumpen-Longin duel provided some great spectacle.

Pictures: Pitstopactiion by night

De redactie

http://www.24u.be/2011/en/fotopages/album/41/

Pictures: Ceremony Dutch Supercar Challenge

De redactie

http://www.24u.be/2011/en/fotopages/album/40/

Pictures: Night shots

De redactie

http://www.24u.be/2011/en/fotopages/album/39/

Corvette C6.R clinches victory in DSC and immediately stops - KRK now takes over the lead!

Gordon McKay

It is somewhat premature to state that the race has taken on a definite turn, but during these last two hours not much has altered in the intermediate rankings. Mad & Daring have just won the DSC round with their Corvette C6.R, with no less than one and a half laps ahead of the Corvette C5-R running in the Rudolph Racing colours. Both Corvettes came into the pits as soon as the chequered flag fell - whereby KRK Racing has now gone into the lead. The Mercedes SLS GT3 with Kumpen, Vanthoor, Wouters, Retera is running like Swiss clockwork and has built up a small lead over the WRT Audi and the VeKa Racing Ferrari. The Dutch were flagged down in third place in the DSC but they are keeping their GT2-Ferrari in the race. The Ferrari with start number 132 was just overtaken by the Audi R8 LMS of W Racing Team. Everything is also running smoothly for Vincent Vosse's team.

After an unsuccessful start JR-Motorsport have now got going in these 24 Hours of Zolder

Gordon McKay

One of the first victims to experience mechanical problems in this 33rd edition of the 24 Hours of Zolder was the JR Motorsport BMW M3 Silhouette. After a mere 5 laps the car was forced to call into the pits with a damaged engine. The team did not hang about and decided immediately to replace the engine. They succeeded in accomplishing this feat in a time span of 4.5 hours. When the car was started fitted with the new engine a gulf of grey smoke invaded their pit box, giving cause for worried looks. A poor connection with the exhaust system was the cause and the problem was swiftly corrected.

Pictures: Night shots from Circuit Zolder

De redactie

http://www.24u.be/2011/en/fotopages/album/38/

Reactions after four hours of racing

Gordon McKay

Koen Wauters - KRK Racing: "So far so good, it's still early days but presently everything is running smoothly. The DSC-team differentiates itself from the other competitors through its smooth pit stops and constant lap times. With an average lap time of 1:35" they are roughly one second per lap faster than their nearest rivals - the Corvette C5-R in the olours of Rudolph Racing. After four hours of racing the gap between the new and younger Corvette amounts to two minutes - in fact almost one and a half laps. KRK Racing is also keeping a close eye on the leaders... but it is becoming ever more difficult for and co. On average the KRK quartet is having to give in some three seconds per lap. "But notwithstanding all that we are still leaders in the Belcar", a smiling Kumpen remarked.
